Prevent Breast Cancer Naturally

Despite billions of dollars spent on breast cancer research and treatments, and even with the so called "modern" treatment methods of chemotherapy and radiation, the best outcome you can hope to achieve is really no better than it was back in the 1960's.

This is very concerning, and it indicates that when it comes to this disease (and many other cancers for that matter), modern medicine has failed. To prevent breast cancer, you must be proactive with your health and take steps that will minimize your chances of ending up with this condition.

When you look at the statistics for this condition, they do not make very nice viewing:

· About 1 in 8 women in the United States (between 12 and 13%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

· In 2010, an estimated 207,090 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 54,010 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.

· Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among U.S. women. More than 1 in 4 cancers in women (about 28%) are breast cancers.

· About 39,840 women in the U.S. are expected to die in 2010 from breast cancer

· About 1,970 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in men in 2010. Less than 1% of all new breast cancer cases occur in men.

The focus of this article is on ways to prevent breast cancer; however most of the techniques I will describe will also help you if you already have breast cancer.

As a woman you can and should take action as soon as you can well before you are at risk for this condition - breast cancer prevention is the best form of health insurance you can and must buy.

This disease (like any form of cancer) is rarely caused by one single factor or event, and therefore there is no single drug or treatment that will stop it from occurring.

To Prevent Breast Cancer Avoid Excess Estrogen

There is a lot of evidence to suggest however that an excess of the hormone estrogen in one form or another, is a central condition in the cause of breast cancer, and by reducing or avoiding excess estrogen in your body (both natural and synthetic) you can prevent this disease from occurring.

For example the synthetic hormone PremPro that was commonly given to menopausal women in the 1980 -90's, was found to increase the incidence of cancer, heart disease, stroke and blood clots in the lungs (2002 World Health Initiative study, and 1996-2001 Million Women Study in the UK).

This drug is a combination of Premarin (synthetic estrogen derived from pregnant horses) and Prov-era (synthetic progesterone called progestin) and it was approved by the FDA for treating hormone imbalances in women. When the news of the health issues broke concerning this drug in 2002 large numbers of women abandoned this drug.

In the following year (2003) breast cancer rates in the US declined an amazing 7% (Reported by MD Anderson Cancer Center at University of Texas). This is firm evidence that synthetic hormones are best avoided at all costs.

How To Prevent Breast Cancer Recurrence

Firstly you must have your hormone levels checked with saliva hormone testing - this is the only truly accurate way to determine the levels of free or active hormones in your body. Blood testing only measures protein bound or inactive hormones, and will not give you a true reading on how much free or active hormone you have in your body.

The hormones that can be tested by saliva testing are: estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA and cortisol (your anti stress hormone). All these levels are important, especially the level of estrogen and progesterone.

You see estrogen and progesterone are usually in a natural balance in the body in the ration of 1:200. Yes that's right, your naturally have a lot more progesterone than estrogen, as progesterone is your body's natural antidote to too much estrogen.

However it is very common in our society for women to have way to much estrogen relative to progesterone, and this is when your risks of cancer (and blood clots and heart disease) start rising dramatically. Even if you have already had this disease, preventing a recurrence of breast cancer is highly important, and taking steps to test and balance your hormones is vital to your long term health.

Balance Your Hormones

After you have tested your hormone levels, then it is a matter or working to restore the balance. By doing so you will not only cut your risk of developing cancer significantly, but you will also improve other symptoms such as night sweats, hot flushes, low libido, vaginal dryness, mood swings, irritability, depression, anxiety, excess weight or fat gain, foggy thinking, increased forgetfulness, and water retention.

Bio-identical hormones (derived from natural plants) on the other hand have been found in studies to be far safer than synthetics as your body recognizes them as its own hormones. They are a precise replica of the hormones produced in your pituitary, ovaries, adrenals, thyroid and testes.

Bio-identical hormones can lead to a dramatic improvement in your health and a reversal of many age related symptoms and signs.

Detoxify Your Blood & Body

Whole body detoxification is also a major weapon for preventing ANY cancer from occurring, including cancer of the breast. A toxic body and blood filled with pesticides, bro-mines, PCB's, fluorides, heavy metals, viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi is like a time bomb waiting to explode. It is only a matter of time before one of the toxins or chemicals or a combination of them (even worse) triggers a cascade of reactions in your body that leads to disease.

Detox whilst you are still well to prevent cancer or any other serious disease from invading your healthy body.

Iodine is very important for the breast and can help to reverse or prevent fibrocystic breast disease and breast cancer. Taking at least 12.5 mg of Iodine every day will reduce the impact of the hormone estradiol on your breast cells and will prevent most, if not all, estrogen positive cancers, which is more than 80% of cancers of the breast.

Food to Prevent Breast Cancer

Nutrition is also highly important for breast cancer prevention. It is very important that you eliminate foods containing too much estrogen such as soy products, dairy products, and poultry. These foods are likely to raise your estrogen levels which may lead to an increased risk of breast cancer.

Other foods to avoid are the dangerous trans-fats, which are present in margarine and polyunsaturated oils. These fats are not natural and are highly dangerous to your body, leading to an increased risk of cancer and degenerative disease.

Also, refined carbohydrates (white bread, white sugar, pastries, sweets etc) in excess lead to increased body fat which in turn leads to more estrogen in the body, further increasing cancer risk.

Foods to prevent breast cancer should be included in your daily diet, and these consist of complex carbohydrates such as fruits and vegetables, high iodine containing foods such as kelp or seaweed, and good quality fats such as omega 3's found in fish and eggs.
